GMS operates the largest independent self-elevated support vessel (SESV) fleet in the MENA region and is the largest in the world. We charter our SESVs to a high quality client base comprising leading NOCs, oil majors and broader oil and gas services companies operating in the MENA region and northwest Europe, for use as customised work platforms for offshore oil and gas construction and well maintenance services. (We also charter our SESVs for use by leading offshore renewable energy companies to support their construction and maintenance of wind farms.)

Our vessels support our clients in two principal areas that span the lifecycle of shallow water offshore oil and gas fields (and offshore renewable energy projects):

Opex Activities, which we define as brownfield projects, operations, maintenance and modifications, with respect to both oil and gas and offshore renewable energy projects, as well as well servicing retrofit or upgrade activities with respect to oil and gas assets. These activities are typically funded out of our clients’ operating budgets.

Capex Activities, which we define as greenfield projects, engineering, procurement and construction activities, installation and decommissioning with respect to both oil and gas and offshore renewable energy projects and, with respect to enhanced oil recovery activities, water injection and gas injection. These activities are typically funded out of our clients’ capital expenditure budgets.



Key advantages of the self-propelled jackup over conventional barges include:


  • Independent

Dynamic Positioning (DP2) allows the vessel to move under her own power with high accuracy positioning alongside a platform.

  • Fast

The vessel can move faster than conventional jackups between locations due to higher transit speeds of six knots and by not requiring anchor deployment.

  • Flexible

GMS is both builder and operator and can adapt/configure the vessel to clients’ requirements, with the vessel able to move easily between oil and gas operations to wind farm installation and maintenance contracts.

  • Safe

Day-to-day work is free from the added hazards a moving vessel introduces. A safer working environment for large numbers of offshore workers.

  • Comfortable

The four-legged design provides a stable platform for those living on board; the efficiency of a man well-rested in a stable bed is greater than someone trying to sleep on a moving vessel (for crew and non-seafarers).

  • Convenient

Two gangways installed in combined operations provide an effective solution for top side maintenance on a smaller platform.

  • Cost effective

The weather window for a conventional jackup barge to move in-field is an average of three days; GMS’ self-propelled jackups can do it in a few hours. No need for tug support/anchor handling. Fuel-efficient.

Our experience has enabled us to find ways to make our barges increasingly efficient and versatile, enabling them to perform enhanced tasks for our clients, at a lower cost.

Our latest innovation is our new Cantilever system which has been developed with exactly these principles at its heart. GMS’ new cantilever is set to provide clients with a much greater range of options in the way they use our barges to service their offshore assets. Developed in partnership with leading Norwegian designer Dwellop A.S., this innovative system will provide current and prospective clients with new cost-effective solutions for work that has traditionally been performed by more expensive non-propelled drilling rigs.

The new cantilever system enables our barges to replace much higher cost drilling rigs for workover operations by offering greater efficiencies, quicker servicing times and lower costs. Our barges can deploy sooner, do not require tugs and the time spent rigging up, rigging down and lifting backwards and forwards is removed. Therefore, significant periods of non-productive time is eliminated, resulting in substantial cost savings for our clients.

Many of the platforms we service are located in shallow water and are well advanced in their operational lifecycle. This creates asset integrity issues, which traditional servicing methods struggle to resolve. The new cantilever allows GMS to address these issues by enabling heavy loads to be supported over the well head without transferring that load to the well head structure itself. Both the technical and commercial cases for developing the new system were therefore highly compelling.

Dwellop A.S. is a former Rolls Royce Marine company and a reputed designer and supplier of topside handling systems for well intervention. The rig and equipment technology is proven and was developed for the harsh environment of the North Sea under the quality requirements of Rolls-Royce.

Rigless Well Services: Current Operations

GMS barges provides a stable platform for accommodation and support of Well Services operations including Pumping, Wireline, Coil Tubing, Well Test & Clean-up operations.

Cantilever for Well Intervention and Work Over Operations

GMS has developed two Cantilever designs to support intervention

  • Light Well Intervention Cantilever focused on aiding safer and more efficient operations for Pumping, Logging, Coil tubing, Well Test & Clean up operations.
  • E Class Work Over Cantilever with automated hoist and top drive system to support heavier workover scopes requiring handling of drill pipe and completion strings. This complete system is designed to perform operations such as plugging and abandonment, light drilling, change out of submerged pumps and completions.

Manpower Services

GMS services includes manpower provision for the maintenance services in support of clients planned maintenance activities on their well head towers and offshore installations. Work carried out can include platform structures, piping, vessels, electrical, instrumentation and helideck replacements.

GMS manpowerGMS team services also covers the planning and logistics personnel based onshore together with fabrication and support services offshore, based on GMS vessels. Work performed can include scope definition and scheduling, detailed work preparation including material supply chain, WHT (well-head tower) repairs, NDT (non-destructive testing) and pressure testing. Our multidiscipline team can be tailored to suit client requirements consisting of project engineers, planners, material co-ordinators, quality control inspectors, construction supervisors and foremen, fabricators, welders, fitters, electrical and instrumentation technicians, riggers and carpenters.”
